Europe has revealed the secret of food tourism — and Trás-os-Montes has been doing it all along.

What the EU confirms: the visit creates the consumer

The European "More Than Only Food & Drink" campaign published an analysis in August 2026 on British food tourism trends that is circulating across specialist media throughout Europe — and which has direct implications for any territory with certified origin products.

The central finding is clear: food tourism is a significant driver of food and drink discovery, with consumers increasingly seeking out the ingredients, flavours and dining rituals they encounter while travelling. More than a product, what the visitor takes home is an experience. And it is that experience that turns them into a repeat customer — long after they have returned home.

PDO is the answer the market is asking for

The report is specific about which type of product best converts this trend into sustained consumption: products carrying PDO and PGI status are particularly well positioned because they offer exactly what many consumers are looking for after travelling — authenticity, provenance and a genuine connection to place. These products tell a story about a region, a tradition and a way of life. (Source: EU "More Than Only Food & Drink" campaign / Business London Press)

Trás-os-Montes PDO Olive Oil is exactly that product. Indigenous varieties such as Cobrançosa, Verdeal Transmontana and Madural, grown in dryland olive groves that survive without irrigation on the schist hillsides of northeastern Portugal — this is a provenance story that exists nowhere else in the world.

This is not just a trend. It is a territorial opportunity.

One of the most significant shifts is a growing interest in EU food occasions and rituals. Rather than simply recreating a dish they enjoyed on holiday, consumers are increasingly looking to recreate the entire experience. (Source: All Post News / EU campaign, August 4, 2026)

For Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, this has a name: olive oil tourism. Not as an isolated tourism product, but as a complete ecosystem — from the mill to the table, from the producer to the accommodation, from the tasting to the online order that arrives three months later.

What Azeite a Norte already has to offer

The ecosystem is built. What is needed is to use it with this strategic awareness:

Every visit to a mill, every guided tasting, every conversation with a producer is a seed of consumption that germinates long after the visitor has left. The European report calls this a trend. We call it reality — it just needs the system to sustain it.

What municipalities need to understand

The economic benefits of food tourism do not stay in the hotel or restaurant. They spread: to the producer who sells directly, to the cooperative that gains international visibility, to the rural accommodation that fills during harvest season, to the village butcher and deli that begin to see demand from visitors.

Consumers are becoming more adventurous in the products they discover abroad, creating opportunities for businesses willing to explore lesser-known regional specialities with strong provenance credentials. (Source: Business Manchester / EU campaign, August 5, 2026)

Trás-os-Montes has exactly those credentials. What is missing, in many cases, is the narrative that communicates them — and this is where the Food Identity Manual that Azeite a Norte is developing plays a central role: giving producers, municipalities and tourism operators the tools to tell this story consistently, at every touchpoint with the visitor.

The visit is the beginning. Consumption is the destination.

The British tourist who tastes Trás-os-Montes DOP olive oil at a mill in Mirandela, who learns to distinguish Cobrançosa from Madural, who takes home a bottle and later searches for another — that tourist is not a visit. They are a long-term customer for the territory.

This is the logic of olive oil tourism. And the world is finally confirming what Trás-os-Montes already knew.
