A family autumn day in the Douro Internacional

Everything is still when a shadow crosses the ground. The children look up — high above the cliffs, a vulture glides without a single wingbeat, riding October's warm air. Their mouths fall open. And, without realising it, they have begun to discover the Douro Internacional through its finest door: wonder.

Autumn is one of the best times to bring the family to this corner of Northern Portugal — where the river draws the border and the sky fills with birds. It is slow, it is outdoors, it has no tickets or queues, and it leaves room for what families need most: unhurried time. Here is a whole day, at a child's pace.

A day in the Douro Internacional, in no hurry at all

The farm as a playground

Begin where you stay: on a real farm. At Casa d'Abó Anica, a local agro-tourism estate, there are donkeys on the property and farm activities that guests may be invited to join — feeding the animals, roaming the land, discovering how life works on the soil. For a child it is an enormous playground with none of a museum's rules; for parents, the quiet of watching them run free and safe.

Eyes on the sky: the cliffs and the vultures

Then simply look up. The Douro Internacional is one of the best places in the country to watch birds of prey — vultures and griffons gliding over the gorge, sometimes right above your heads. Bring binoculars (or lend each other your eyes) and make a game of it: who spots the first, how many you count, where they go. It is the same searching-and-finding play as a walk in the woods — but aimed at the sky. The «Arribas, Miradouros e Abutres» experience takes you to the best spots, and there are guided nature tours in the area too.

The cradle of an olive oil

This is also the cradle of a great olive oil. On the Planalto Mirandês, in municipalities such as Vimioso, olive oils are born that cross borders — Distintus, from Campo de Víboras, is one that reaches chefs' tables around the world. At lunch, nothing beats a slice of bread with a thread of the region's new olive oil: the most honest way to explain good olive oil to a child — let them taste it.

If you want more

If the group asks for more, the area holds a treasure of its own: the Côa rock engravings, thousands of years old, are a fine place to visit for anyone who wants to add a little history to the day. The suggestion stands, with no pressure to keep it.

Before you go

Bring field shoes, clothes with pockets, binoculars and time to go unhurried. The beauty of a family autumn day here is that it works for every age and needs no rigid plan — the river, the sky and the farm do the rest. One note: watch the birds calmly and quietly, so as not to startle them.

The olive oil of Trás-os-Montes cannot be explained. It has to be tasted.
