Family Olive Oil Tourism: What to Do in Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro with Children

There's a type of vacation that children remember forever. Not the kind with theme parks and long queues, not the kind with resorts, heated pools, and entertainment at 5 pm. The kind of vacation where they touched a donkey for the first time, rode a solar boat on a seemingly endless lake, saw olive oil coming from the press, and took home the bottle they helped choose.

Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro is that kind of vacation. And in most cases, it's the parents who are most captivated.

A Territory Tailored to Families

There's a simple reason why this region works so well with children: the space.

The streets are wide. The fields aren't fenced. The river beaches aren't crowded. The restaurants have tables for the whole family. And people have patience and genuine affection for the youngest members of the family — because here life is still lived on a scale where everyone knows their neighbors.

Added to this is safety. Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro is one of the regions with the lowest crime rates in the country. The main roads are well-maintained. Nature activities are accessible to all ages. And the pace of the region — slow, unhurried — is exactly what any family with children needs most when going on vacation.

In spring, with the greenery at its peak and the days long, it's the perfect time to explore.

The Experiences Children Never Forget

🐴Donkey Rides of Miranda — Miranda do Douro

Burros de Miranda

If there's one experience that defines a visit to this region with children, it's this one.

The Miranda Donkey — the only native donkey breed in Portugal — is a noble animal with long, brown fur, extraordinarily docile and sociable. The AEPGA (Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys) has its Miranda Donkey Valorization Center in the village of Atenor, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro, where it's possible to visit the stables, learn the names of the animals and, for more adventurous families, take donkey rides through the Mirandês Plateau and the Douro International Natural Park [1][2].

The guided tour lasts about an hour and is adapted to the interests of each group. Children up to 6 years old enter for free. For the younger ones, the contact with the donkeys — who approach without fear and love petting — is one of those moments that no screen can replace [3].

Practical information:

  • Location: Atenor village, Miranda do Douro

  • Opening Hours (April to October): Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM | July and August also on Sundays

  • Prices: €7.50/adult · Free for children under 6 · Prior booking required

  • Reservations: reservas@aepga.pt | +351 273 739 307

🚂 The Mirandela Tourist Train — Mirandela

In Mirandela — the "Garden City" of northeastern Trás-os-Montes — one of the most popular programs for families is the Tourist Train: a 25-30 minute ride through the city's most emblematic locations, with the Tua River and centuries-old olive groves as a backdrop [4][5].

The route runs along Rua da República, Avenida Varandas do Tua, Ponte Europa, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Amparo and ends near Ponte Velha — with a recommended stop at the Olive and Olive Oil Museum, housed in the former Mirandela Mill, where children are genuinely fascinated by the old tools and the accessible explanation of the production process [6].

Practical information:

  • Prices: €3/adult · €1.50/child over 3 years old

  • Minimum of 8 adults to start the tour

  • Departure: Largo do Santuário de N. Sra. do Amparo

⛵ Solar Cruise on the Azibo Reservoir — Macedo de Cavaleiros

Cruzeiro

In Macedo de Cavaleiros, at the Azibo Reservoir — a protected area classified by UNESCO — Sun Azibo Cruises operates a silent, eco-friendly solar-powered boat that glides through the crystal-clear waters of the lake without making noise, without polluting, in total harmony with the ecosystem [7][8].

The 1-hour cruise explores the reservoir, with optional stops for swimming (in the warmer months), bird watching, and tasting regional products on board. For families who prefer the end of the day, the sunset cruise (2 hours) is one of the most photographed experiences in the region — and one that children talk about the most afterwards [9].

For the more active, Sun Azibo also has kart bikes, SUP, and kayaks available on the reservoir.

Practical information:

  • Location: Azibo Reservoir Quay, Macedo de Cavaleiros

  • Contact: geral@sunazibo.com · +351 917 738 892

  • Advance booking recommended, especially during peak season

Oil tourism for the youngest visitors: When the farm becomes a classroom

One of the most unique experiences in this region — and one of the most memorable for children — is a visit to an olive oil producer.

Acushla

Imagine the scene: entering a centuries-old olive grove, with twisted-trunk olive trees that are older than your great-grandparents. Understanding how olives are transformed into olive oil. Seeing the olive press in operation. Tasting freshly pressed olive oil with rustic bread and realizing it has a completely different flavor from what you have at home. Leaving with a bottle of Trás-os-Montes PDO olive oil that your family helped choose.

For children, it's a lesson in science, history, and gastronomy all in one. For parents, it's a connection to the land that can't be explained — it's felt.

The producers partnered with Azeite a Norte open their farms for these types of visits in several of the 17 municipalities in the region.

Nature Without Limits: Parks, Rivers and Walkways

For families seeking days of fresh, clean air, the region offers an inexhaustible array of options.

The Tua Valley and the Walkways

Between Alijó, Murça, Vila Flor, Carrazeda de Ansiães, and Mirandela, the Tua Valley offers riverside walkways accessible to all ages — including young children. The sound of the water, the dense vegetation, and the enclosed valley scenery make these routes an experience that many families repeat year after year.

Montesinho Natural Park

In Bragança and Vinhais, the Montesinho Natural Park offers riverside trails suitable for families, wildlife — deer, foxes, birds of prey — and traditional villages where children can understand what life was like before supermarkets and screens. A visit to the village of Rio de Onor — divided by the border with Spain, with the river separating the two halves — is one of the most unique experiences in the entire region.

Family Weekend Suggestion (2 Days)

This is just a starting point — the region has much more to offer, and each family has its own pace.

Saturday — Miranda do Douro and Mirandese Plateau

  • Morning: Arrival in Miranda do Douro. Visit to the historic city, the Cathedral, and the viewpoint overlooking the International Douro River

  • Mid-morning: Donkey ride with AEPGA in Atenor (prior reservation required)

  • Lunch: Mirandesa-style steak at a local restaurant — the meat that children from Trás-os-Montes have known since they were babies

  • Afternoon: Boat trip on the Douro River (Environmental Cruise of the International Biological Station, with explanations about the fauna and flora of the cliffs)

  • Night: Accommodation in the Mirandese Plateau

Return with one or two bottles of DOP olive oil in the suitcase

Practical Tips for Families

Best time to visit: April to June — long days, mild temperatures, lush greenery, and activities in full swing. July and August are great but warmer; September remains excellent.

Accommodation: The area has rural houses and guesthouses with outdoor space, farms with animals and home-cooked meals — much more suitable for families with children than urban hotels.

👉 Check accommodation at azeiteanorte.pt/alojamento

Reservations: The most popular activities — especially the Miranda Donkeys and the Sun Azibo Cruise — sell out quickly on spring weekends. Book at least one week in advance.

Trails: Most of the walkways in the Tua Valley are easily accessible for children over 5-6 years old. For younger children, the flat trails along the river are the best option.

What to bring: Closed-toe shoes for hiking, swimsuit (the lakes and rivers start to have pleasant temperatures from May onwards), sunscreen, camera — children love taking photos.

What is Brought Back

The first time you bring a child to Trás-os-Montes, the same thing always happens: on the way back, they ask when you're coming back.

Because this region does something few destinations manage—it makes children slow down to the pace of adults, and adults speed up to the pace of children. And for a few days, the whole family exists at the same speed.
