Water Running Free: Waterfalls, Rivers and Spring Lakes in Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro

There's a sound that defines this territory in spring, and it's impossible to describe to anyone who hasn't heard it: the sound of water. Not the constant, predictable seawater. The water that runs between rocks, that flows down slopes after the rains, that accumulates in quiet lakes among the mountains. The water that, after months of winter, awakens with spring and transforms Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro into what it truly is—one of the most impressive water territories in Portugal.
Spring is the right season to discover it. The rivers run full, the streams regain their voice, the waterfalls reach their peak, and the vegetation on the banks is at its greenest. Those who arrive at this time have the right time—and those who leave it for summer may find some of these natural spectacles reduced to a trickle of water.
The Waterfall That No One Expects to Find: Faia da Água Alta, Mogadouro
If there is one place that alone justifies a trip to this region, it is the Faia da Água Alta Waterfall, in the municipality of Mogadouro.

Classified as a geosites of national interest and considered one of the most important natural monuments of the Douro International Natural Park, this waterfall plunges more than 35 meters high and 10 meters wide, cascading from the plateau streams directly onto the banks of the Douro River [1][2]. The blue and cold waters of the Ribeira de Lamoso blend with the green of the Mediterranean forest that covers the slopes—alders, willows, and ash trees—and with the grey of the granite walls of the valley, creating a visual composition that changes every hour of the day [3].
The best time to visit is precisely this: from October to May, when the flow is at its peak and the landscape has not yet dried out from the Transmontane heat [4]. In summer, the stream may be reduced to a trickle—the spectacle is quite different. Come now.
How to get there and what to expect
The starting point is the village of Bemposta, in the municipality of Mogadouro. From there, the PR4 MGD trail begins – a circular route of approximately 8.6 km with moderate difficulty, starting at Praça do Santo Cristo. The trail passes by the pillory and the emblazoned houses of Bemposta, climbs to the Chapel of Santa Bárbara (with its viewpoint over the International Douro), descends the slope to the Ribeira de Bemposta, and skirts the slope to the most anticipated point: the waterfall [5].
There is also a shorter and more direct variant from the village of Lamoso – only 2 km on foot (4 km round trip), well signposted and accessible to all types of hikers [3]. If you are coming with children or prefer something less demanding, this is the right option.
Practical note: the circular trail has steep sections. Hiking shoes are recommended, even for the short variant.
The Tua Valley: When the River is the Way
North of Mogadouro, crossing the municipalities of Mirandela, Murça, Vila Flor, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Alijó, the Tua River flows through a valley that is probably one of the most dramatic landscapes in northern Portugal.
In spring, the Tua flows strongly. The slopes that descend to the water's edge are covered in green—broom, rockrose, oaks—and the walkways that follow part of the valley place the visitor centimeters from the current, suspended above the water, in an unforgettable experience.
The São Mamede de Ribatua walkways, in the municipality of Alijó, are one of the most accessible entry points to the valley — and one of the trails that has grown most in popularity in recent years, for reasons that become immediately clear upon seeing our complete guide to the walkways and trails in the region. This is the territory of the Vale do Tua Regional Natural Park — the same park that houses the Dark Sky® Vale do Tua, the first protected area in Portugal certified for stargazing. By day, the river. By night, the stars. There are worse ways to spend a weekend.
The Lakes of Flavor: Blue as Far as the Eye Can See
To the east, between the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros, lies a water landscape that most Portuguese people have yet to discover: the Sabor Lakes.

Born with the construction of the Baixo Sabor Dam, there are three lakes — Lago de Cilhades, Lago dos Santuários and Lago do Medal — that stretch for more than 70 kilometers of crystal-clear water, linked together by gorges and cliffs that form a natural sanctuary [6]. The blue of the water, which changes hue according to the light of day, mixes with the green of the mountains and the grey of the rocks in a spectacle that, depending on the time of day, can look like a painting.
The Great Panoramic Route of Baixo Sabor, with approximately 220 kilometers organized into 3 circuits, covers the best angles over the lakes — and can be done by car with stops at viewpoints, or on foot/bicycle on the dirt sections [7].
The Sabor Ecotrail, Torre de Moncorvo
For those who prefer to walk or cycle along the water, the Sabor Ecotrail in Torre de Moncorvo offers 34 km along the old Sabor railway line — a flat route, by the river, with still intact banks and river fauna as company [6]. In full spring, with the river full and the willows in bloom, it is one of the most relaxing routes in the whole territory.
The Rivers of Montesinho: Water in the Mountains of Bragança and Vinhais
In the far north of the territory, in the municipalities of Bragança and Vinhais, the Montesinho Natural Park is crossed by a network of mountain rivers — the Sabor, the Maçãs, the Baceiro in the Bragança area; the Mente, the Rabaçal and the Tuela in the Vinhais area — all with deep valleys, crystal-clear waters and banks dotted with centuries-old mills and medieval bridges [8].
In spring, these rivers are at their best time of year: maximum flows, still cool temperatures, and the mountains still green before the summer heat. The valleys of the Tuela and the Mente, in particular, offer landscapes of water nestled between slopes covered with oak groves, which are the ideal setting for walks along the river.
The Ponte de Soeira River Beach, in Vinhais, in the heart of the Montesinho Natural Park, is one of the most beautiful river beaches in Northeast Trás-os-Montes — bathed by the waters of the Tuela River, with renovated facilities and very popular with residents of the region [9].
The International Douro: When the River Is a Border

To the south and east, in the municipalities of Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro, the Douro is not a gentle river. It is a river that, over millions of years, has carved a canyon of granite and schist, forming the Arribas do Douro Internacional — vertical walls hundreds of meters high where the Egyptian vulture, the griffon vulture, and the golden eagle nest.
Seeing the river from up here — from the Miradouro de São João das Arribas in Miranda do Douro, for example — is a completely different experience from any other. The Douro down below is small, almost unreal. The sense of scale that this valley creates is difficult to prepare for.
In spring, the birdlife of the Douro Internacional is at its peak — it is the nesting season, when endangered species are most active and visible [10]. For those who enjoy birdwatching, it is the perfect combination: river, cliffs, and rare species all in one place.
Water, Olive Oil and Table
This region doesn't separate nature from the table. After a day on the rivers and waterfalls, tradition dictates a stop at a local restaurant—and the gastronomy of Trás-os-Montes has everything the effort demands: Mirandesa-style steak, Mirandela sausages, wheat bread with DOP Trás-os-Montes olive oil.
The olive oil produced in this same territory—in the olive groves that border valleys and rivers, which you can visit through the Azeite a Norte network—is made with the same water that feeds these rivers.
There's a connection between the watery landscape you see outside and the flavor on the plate. Those who come understand this without needing explanations.
When to Go and What to Bring
The best time to see this region at its peak of water is between March and May: full rivers, lush green vegetation, and mild temperatures. In June, the water level begins to recede in the smaller rivers, and some waterfalls lose flow.
For Faia da Água Alta and the riverside trails: waterproof hiking shoes, layered clothing (mornings are still cool), and a swimsuit if the season allows for swimming in the river beaches. For the Sabor Lakes by car: no special preparation is needed—the viewpoints are accessible, and the trails vary in difficulty.
The essentials, this region already has: silence, landscape, and time. Bring the rest from home.
