Ready to Book: the Terra Fria in autumn — chestnut woods, mill and table

Arvore Outono

Two days to live the Terra Fria of Trás-os-Montes in its finest season: the mountains turning colour, the chestnut groves full, the smoking season beginning and the new olive oil coming out of the mill. This is a ready-to-book itinerary — what to do, where to stay, where to eat and what to book ahead. Ideal for a weekend for two or with the family, from October to November.

The itinerary, in two days

Day 1 — the mountains, the souto and the table

Day 2 — the olive oil and the mill

  • Morning at the mill: a guided visit and a tasting of new olive oil at an estate with a visitable mill — Quinta do Barracão da Vilariça, to the south, with two mills (one about 200 years old and a modern one) and an olive grove to stroll. It is just over an hour from the mountains; in the Terra Fria the olive grove gives way to the chestnut wood, so olive oil is best lived in the neighbouring olive-growing municipalities.

  • Before heading back: one last tasting and new olive oil to take home. To see what happens in the grove at this time, here is the October in the Olive Grove guide.

The Terra Fria in autumn: the essentials to book

  • When to go: mid-October to November — chestnuts falling, new oil flowing, the first cold.

  • Where to stay: base in Bragança or Vinhais, in the heart of the Terra Fria (see the network's stays).

  • Where to eat: a Trás-os-Montes table — posta beef, smoked meats, chestnuts and a thread of new olive oil.

  • Book ahead: the mill visit (by appointment only), the guided walk and your dinner table.

  • What to bring: mountain shoes, a warm layer for the first cold, a bag for chestnuts and binoculars if you like nature.

  • Who it's for: weekends for two and families who love the outdoors, flavour and unhurried time.
