Murça Olive Oils, Number 1 in the World | Olive Tourism Trás-os-Montes

Olive oils from Murça gain worldwide recognition and elevate olive oil tourism in the Trás-os-Montes region.

The flavored olive oil "Porca de Murça – Cacau Fused", produced by the Agricultural Cooperative of Olive Growers of Murça (CAOM), achieved 1st place in the prestigious ranking "TOP 25 Flavored Oils of the World 2025", becoming the first Portuguese product to reach the top of this international classification. The distinction, awarded by the EVOO World Ranking of the World Association of Journalists of Wine and the Spirit (WAWWJ), consolidates Murça as a world reference in olive oil innovation and reinforces the potential of olive tourism in Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.


The innovation didn't stop there. The recently launched "Azeite Porca de Murça – Castanha Judia", a result of the collaboration with producer Lino Sampaio from Carrazedo de Montenegro, won nine international awards in its debut year, guaranteeing direct entry into the world's TOP 25 flavored olive oils. This edition combines Cordovil de Murça olive oil with the emblematic Castanha Judia (Jewish Chestnut), celebrating unique products from the Trás-os-Montes region in competitions held in Italy, Israel, Tunisia, and Argentina – countries with deep olive oil traditions.


These international recognitions represent much more than awards for the region. In a European context where olive tourism is rapidly expanding – with Mediterranean countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece leading experiences that combine visits to olive mills, sensory tastings, and cultural immersion in centuries-old olive groves – Murça's achievements position Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro on the map of excellent olive oil destinations. The territorial innovation demonstrated by CAOM, which accumulated 96 national and international awards in 2025, proves that the quality of the products and the authenticity of the Trás-os-Montes experiences can compete at the highest global level, attracting visitors interested in learning about the origin of world-renowned olive oils.


For regional olive oil tourism, these distinctions translate into concrete opportunities: greater international visibility, enhanced value for the experiences offered by local producers, and the consolidation of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro as a distinctive destination in an increasingly competitive European market. The worldwide recognition of Murça olive oils is, ultimately, recognition of the territory, its people, its landscape, and the tourism potential that olive oil tourism represents for the entire region.
