Azeite a Norte is now a UNESCO Association

Azeite a Norte Associação (ANa) signed, on 24 October 2026, the protocol joining the Portuguese Network of UNESCO Associations and Clubs, thereby becoming a UNESCO Association. The recognition places the project's mission — to structure and showcase the olive oil tourism (olivoturismo) of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro — within an international framework devoted to education, culture and sustainability.
A territory with five UNESCO designations
The 17-municipality territory in which ANa operates holds one of the densest concentrations of UNESCO designations in Portugal, with five distinct recognitions: the Alto Douro Wine Region (World Heritage, 2001), the Prehistoric Rock Art of the Côa Valley (World Heritage, 1998), the Meseta Ibérica Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (2015), the Terras de Cavaleiros UNESCO Global Geopark (2014/2015) and the Caretos de Podence / Winter Festivities (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, 2019).
For ANa, this multiple presence is not an external reference but an internal reality of the territory it travels — giving it a natural role as mediator between visitors, local communities and the region's UNESCO heritage.
The mission it takes on
Joining the network formalises and broadens that role. The values that frame UNESCO's mission — education, culture, sustainability, intercultural dialogue and the safeguarding of heritage — are fully aligned with Azeite a Norte's strategic goals.
Within this framework, the association plans an annual «Território UNESCO» cycle of itinerant gatherings devoted to interpreting the five designations; the extension of the «Escolas no Olival» educational programme, under development, to heritage literacy in the schools of the 17 municipalities; and the continuation of the Arquivo Vivo and the Museu sem Paredes — both under development — as tools for safeguarding memory and for non-formal education across the territory. To these is added the olive oil tourism training programme (50 hours / 2 ECTS), developed with the Polytechnic University of Bragança and bearing the seal of CIMO and the Agrarian School of Bragança.
A commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals
ANa's activities under the UNESCO Association framework make a direct contribution to seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda:
SDG 2 — Zero Hunger & Sustainable Agriculture: valuing traditional rain-fed olive growing and the territory's native cultivars.
SDG 4 — Quality Education: the 50h / 2 ECTS training programme, «Escolas no Olival» and the Museu sem Paredes as a space for non-formal education.
SDG 8 — Decent Work & Economic Growth: olive oil tourism as a driver of employment, sustainable income and population retention in a low-density territory.
SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities & Communities: strengthening the identity, cohesion and vitality of the rural communities of the 17 municipalities.
SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption & Production: the Digital Product Passport for olive oil as a tool for transparency and informed consumption.
SDG 15 — Life on Land: preserving centuries-old rain-fed olive groves and biodiversity, in articulation with the Biosphere Reserve and the Geopark.
SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals: the project's network of institutional, academic and international partners.
These goals are pursued across the association's regular programme, without creating a parallel structure.
A second international anchor
Recognition as a UNESCO Association adds to ANa's membership of «The Routes of the Olive Tree», the Council of Europe Cultural Route linking the olive-growing territories of the Mediterranean. Together they form two coherent and complementary anchors of international projection for the olive oil tourism of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.
