Miranda do Douro's ancient winter festival earns Intangible Cultural Heritage status — and the best reason to spend New Year's in Trás-os-Montes

There are territories that have kept alive traditions the rest of the world has long forgotten. Trás-os-Montes is one of them — and Miranda do Douro, in particular, has preserved a set of winter solstice rituals that exist nowhere else on earth.

The latest recognition came on September 16, 2026, published in Portugal's Official Gazette: the Festa do Menino of Vila Chã de Braciosa has been inscribed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, under Urgent Safeguarding status. What the Festa da Velha is — and why it happens on January 1st

The Festa do Menino — also known as the Festa da Velha (Festival of the Old Woman), the New Year Festival or the Festival of Braciosa — is a pagan-origin ritual that takes place on the first day of every year, in the village of Vila Chã de Braciosa, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro.

From early morning, three figures walk through the village streets: the Velha (Old Woman), the Bailador (Male Dancer) and the Bailadeira (Female Dancer) — all with faces darkened with burnt cork, dancing to the sound of the gaita de foles (Galician bagpipe), the bombo drum and the caixa snare. Going door to door, greeting residents and receiving donations — traditionally money or smoked meats, carried on the Velha's pole. The round ends before a solemn midday mass. Why this recognition matters — and why it is urgent

Inscription under Urgent Safeguarding is not a formality. It is a warning signal: Portugal's Official Gazette is explicit in identifying "high risks and threats to the continuity" of this tradition, and the urgency of measures to "guarantee its future viability." The Festa do Menino was dormant for many years — and was recovered roughly a decade ago by the community of Vila Chã de Braciosa itself, with pride and determination. As the municipality's president, Helena Barril, put it, "the younger generations, through the legacy passed on by their ancestors, will ensure this ritual is never forgotten." The municipality now plans a set of safeguarding measures: national and international outreach, participation in festivals of winter solstice masquerade and folklore, and active transmission to younger generations.
