The story of Romeu doesn't begin in an archive or a history book. It begins on an afternoon in May 1874, when a man in a top hat arrived on horseback, asked an innkeeper named Maria Rita for cod — and never really left.
Nestled among centuries-old cork oaks and olive groves, Romeu — also known as Jerusalém do Romeu — is just 12 km from Mirandela, but feels like it exists in a different dimension of time. It is now recognised as a Community Site of Interest within the Natura 2000 Network, thanks to its exceptional cork oak woodland in outstanding conservation condition [1].
The village and the story of Clemente Menéres

On 18 May 1874, Clemente Menéres arrived in Romeu on horseback from Porto, looking for cork oaks. He stopped at Maria Rita's inn, ate bacalhau with dark rye bread — and was captivated. He bought land, created the Quinta do Romeu, replanted vineyards and expanded the olive groves. A family legacy was born that today spans the fifth and sixth generation of the Menéres family [2][3].
His son, Manoel Menéres, invested in the local community — building a nursery, a kindergarten, the Museum of Curiosities — and transformed the old inn into a gastronomic landmark now elected one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal at the Table [3].
Trilho Entre Rios Trail (PR3 MDL): cork oaks, olive groves and the Romeu skyline
The PR3 MDL — Trilho Entre Rios departs from Mirandela's Campsite and winds through rural paths among olive trees, cork oaks, heather and pines. A gradual climb opens views over the Serra de Santa Comba, Serra de Bornes and Serra de Faro — and over the classified Romeu Site (Quadrassal) [4]. Along the way, the Miradouro do Bilhardo offers a 360° panorama over hills, valleys and the River Tua [4].

Restaurante Maria Rita: the menu that never changes — and never fails

"The menu has stayed unchanged since 1966, using my great-grandfather's recipes" — João Menéres, current family steward [3]. This deliberate stillness is what makes Restaurante Maria Rita unlike anywhere else: no daily specials, no trends. Just what has always been — and that is everything.
What you can't miss:
Bacalhau à Romeu — the mythic salt cod dish, made with Romeu Organic Olive Oil and estate potatoes
Sopa Seca — mixed meats and smoked sausage with chickpeas, finished with oven-baked bread in a clay pot
Alheira Toasts — homemade alheira sausage, grilled over embers
Dark Chocolate Mousse with Olive Oil — the dessert that made the 7 Wonders shortlist
Romeu Organic Olive Oil — in nearly every dish; take a bottle home
"If it's not made with Romeu Olive Oil and their potatoes, it's not worth attempting." [2]
Maria Rita works by reservation — demand is high and tables are few. Contact the estate directly before visiting: romeu.pt.
Our travel advice
Romeu is not a one-hour stop. Arrive mid-morning, visit the Museum of Curiosities, walk among the cork oaks and olive groves, and sit at Maria Rita's table without any rush to leave. If you can stay overnight in the area, even better. Explore routes, producers and experiences available in the Mirandela region.
Trás-os-Montes olive oil can't be explained. It has to be tasted.
