📍 Alijó · Alto Douro Wine Region · UNESCO World Heritage Site

There are villages that simply prove themselves. Favaios, in the municipality of Alijó, is one of them: perched on a plateau in the Serra de Vilarelho, with a history dating back to the "Castle of the Moors," it is today synonymous with a wine that exists nowhere else in the world — Moscatel de Favaios.
If you are looking for a village in the Douro Wine Region — a UNESCO World Heritage site — where wine, bread, and stately history all fit into a single visit, Favaios awaits you.
Houses bearing coats of arms and the largest bell tower in the municipality
In the center of the village, the Solar dos Sepúlvedas and the Casa dos Távoras are two imposing examples of Douro stately architecture. A few steps away, the Igreja Matriz de São Domingos boasts the tallest bell tower in the municipality of Alijó—it's worth looking up before entering.
Museum of Bread and Wine: the two riches of Favaios
Housed in an 18th-century building with a Baroque façade, the Favaios Museum Centre – Bread and Wine interprets the history of the two products that give the village its identity. On the way out, it's worth seeking out one of the traditional bakeries – Favaios continues to make the famous four-cornered bread as it has for generations.
Moscatel de Favaios: tasting at the Cooperative Winery
"Favaios is synonymous with Moscatel, and Moscatel is synonymous with the Favaios Cooperative Winery."

A visit with a tasting is the sweetest way to understand why this wine gave its name to the village — and why it's worth bringing a bottle home.
What you can't miss:
Moscatel de Favaios — tasting at the Cooperative Winery
Favaios bread ("four corners") — fresh from the oven, in a traditional bakery
Meat pie — a local specialty with its own identity
Distance: Alijó (municipal seat) a few kilometers away
Best time: Spring and autumn — vineyards are the highlight of the Douro wine region
Favaios Trail (PR14 ALJ): from the village to the Iron Age hill fort
Starting directly from Largo Conselheiro Teixeira Sousa, in Favaios, is the PR14 ALJ — Favaios-Alijó Trail, a circular route through terraced vineyards that connects Favaios to Alijó and returns via a different path. Along the way, two small detours lead to Vilarelho Castle — a fortified Iron Age settlement — and the Santa Bárbara viewpoint.
Distance: 7 km (Circular)
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 2 hours
Santa Bárbara viewpoint: the Douro wine region as far as the eye can see
One of the detours on the PR14 trail climbs to the Santa Bárbara viewpoint, overlooking Alijó — terraced vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, in one of the most characteristic panoramas of the Alto Douro Wine Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Good light at the end of the afternoon.
Our travel advice
Favaios is small, but it's unhurried — and that's why it's worth visiting. Wander past the stately homes, admire the bell tower, taste the still-warm bread, and finish with a glass of Moscatel. It all fits into one morning — and stays in your memory much longer.
Favaios proves that the best treasures of the Douro are also meant to be drunk. 🍷
