Portugal hosts the Olive Oil World Congress in July — and Trás-os-Montes takes the stage

On 2 and 3 July 2026, Lisbon becomes the world capital of olive oil. The Centro Cultural de Belém hosts the second edition of the Olive Oil World Congress (OOWC), one of the leading international forums dedicated to the olive oil sector, bringing together experts, researchers, producers and institutional representatives from more than 20 countries.

The institutional opening will be led by José Manuel Fernandes, Portugal's Minister of Agriculture and Sea, and Jaime Lillo, Executive Director of the International Olive Council (IOC). The opening keynote will be delivered by Dr. Fabrice DeClerck, scientist at EAT-Lancet, on the role of olive oil in the food systems of the future.

Trás-os-Montes with a voice on the international stage

José Alberto Pereira, from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, will address the contribution of traditional olive groves to the conservation of biodiversity — a topic that speaks directly to the territory Azeite a Norte represents. The centuries-old olive groves of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro are exactly the type of production systems the OOWC places at the centre of the international debate.

Portugal's representation also includes Carla Inés (National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research), Gonçalo Moreira (Olivum), Ana Carrilho (Lisbon Superior Agronomy Institute), and Carlos Fontão de Carvalho and Luis Duarte Melo (Portuguese Academy of Gastronomy).

The congress's central themes include the evolution of international markets, the adaptation of olive groves to climate change, agronomic and varietal innovation, advanced mechanisation, farm digitalisation and sustainability across the value chain.

The OOWC is supported by the IOC, CIHEAM Zaragoza, the Mediterranean Diet Foundation and the Ministries of Agriculture of Portugal and Spain.

For those who work daily with producers, territories and olive oil experiences — as all Azeite a Norte partners do — this congress sends a clear message: the world is looking at Portugal, and Portugal is talking about us.
