The history of olive oil in Trás-os-Montes is not written only in books. In some villages, it is carved into the stones of a press, cast in the iron of a screw, held in the memory of those who still remember watching oxen turn the millstone. Lavandeira, in the municipality of Carrazeda de Anciães, is one of those villages.
The mill that refused to die
In the centre of Lavandeira, a stone building holds what remains of centuries of Transmontana olive culture: the Olive Oil Mill Museum Nucleus, the first territorial branch of the Rural Memory Museum, based in Vilarinho da Castanheira.
The mill closed in the late 1970s. For years the building deteriorated. But in 2015, with the support of the local parish and the Carrazeda de Anciães municipality, the mill was recovered and opened as a museum space — an investment of around €65,000 that returned one of the village's most defining features.
Inside, visitors find the original equipment: the central-screw press — cast iron, made by the Companhia Industrial de Fundição do Porto —, the millstone where two oxen turned for roughly two hours to crush the olives, and the decantation tank where the golden thread of olive oil was finally separated. The entire traditional production process is documented through graphic panels, ethnographic video footage and historical photography.
More than machines: memories
What makes this space special is not just the equipment — it is the human layer that surrounds it. The museum project includes oral testimonies from Lavandeira residents who still remember the olive harvest, the songs exchanged between groups of day labourers, the smell of new oil. These are the voices of a generation that lived the mill as the centre of community life — and who now lend that memory to the future.
Carrazeda de Anciães: between the Douro and the Tua
Lavandeira sits within a municipality of strong identity. Carrazeda de Anciães lies between the Douro and the Tua rivers, in the heart of the Tua Valley Natural Regional Park. It is a land of olive groves, terraced vineyards, historic villages and one of the oldest olive-growing traditions in the region.
Less than 10 minutes from Lavandeira, the Grapple Hotel (4-star) offers accommodation with a Transmontana restaurant and a unique wellness experience in its Spa: an olive oil massage using essential oils from local producers.
About 20 minutes away, in the neighbouring municipality of Vila Flor, Quinta do Barracão da Vilariça offers something that perfectly complements a visit to Lavandeira's mill: a two-century-old olive oil eco-museum, a small working press and olive oil tastings with a visit to a traditional grove. It bridges the past shown in the museum with production that remains alive.
Also in Vila Flor, Quinta do Pinheiro has a 50-year-old grove — planted three generations ago — considered one of the most beautiful in the municipality.
Visiting the Lavandeira mill
The Olive Oil Mill Museum operates by appointment, through the Carrazeda de Anciães Tourism Office (LIT, tel. +351 278 098 507, email: lit@cmca.pt). Entry is free.
The village is in the parish of Lavandeira, Beira Grande e Selores, a few kilometres from the municipal seat. It is easily reached by car. From Vila Flor or Mirandela, the drive takes less than 30 minutes.
