Treasures of the North: Urrós, the gateway to the Douro Cliffs

Rio

📍 Mogadouro • Douro International Natural Park

6 km from the Spanish border, on the Mirandese plateau, lies a granite village that preserves underground cellars, medieval chapels, and one of the most dramatic views in the Douro International Natural Park.

Some villages don't need to announce themselves. Urrós, in the municipality of Mogadouro, is one of them. A witness to the region's railway history — the old Sabor Line station still marks the entrance to the town— today it lives with the calm of those who have always known that what is most valuable is beneath their feet and around their eyes.

A village with a living memory

The Urrós Rural Museum is the first must-see stop: here you'll find ancestral agricultural tools, old photographs, and utensils that tell the story of the daily lives of generations who transformed granite and earth into a way of life. A short visit, but one that puts everything that follows into perspective.

Bodegas de Urrós: The Granite Refrigerators

Bodegas

Urrós' greatest treasure is literally buried. The 32 underground cellars — galleries carved into the soft rock where the inhabitants preserved wine and food at a cool, constant temperature — are a unique fragment of rural Trás-os-Montes culture.

The temperature inside remains consistently lower than outside, functioning as ancestral "natural refrigerators." They are currently being restored through the BORDERLINE project, a cross-border initiative with the Spanish village of Fermoselle, which will transform these cellars into a sustainable tourist route using augmented reality and immersive storytelling.

Local tip: Visit the cellars in the late afternoon — the temperature difference between the inside and outside is even more surprising on summer days.

The trail that tells it all: Between olive groves, necropolises and cliffs

For hiking enthusiasts, the PR3 — Trilho de São Fagundo this is the best way to discover Urrós at your own pace. The 14.4 km circular route of moderate difficulty starts in the village itself and takes you through traditional olive groves, vineyards and almond trees before reaching the end of the world — literally. Along the way you will find:

Ruins of the Medieval Chapel of São Fagundo

The front portal and the triumphal arch have withstood the centuries. Even in ruins, the Chapel of São Fagundo is impressive — and the Medieval Necropolis carved into the rock right next to it, with the mysterious "Moorish footprints" engraved in the granite, transforms the place into something between archaeology and mysticism.

Cerca Viewpoint: the Douro River down below

The highlight of the route — literally. The Miradouro da Cerca viewpoint offers a breathtaking view over the cliffs of the Douro International: the granite escarpments that separate Portugal from Spain with an almost impossible verticality. It's the kind of landscape that doesn't photograph well, because the real scale doesn't fit on the screen.

Distance: 14.4 km (circular)

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 3h30–4h

Best time: Spring and autumn (summer can be scorching)

Gastronomy: The Best of Trás-os-Montes Cuisine

After exploring the cliffs and breathing in the cool plateau air, you'll want to sit down at a table. At Restaurante A Lareira, in Mogadouro, just 7 km away, chef Eliseu Amaro — who learned in Paris and returned to his roots — celebrates the cuisine of Trás-os-Montes with the fireplace always lit.

What You Can't Miss:

  • Guisoto à transmontana — lactarius mushrooms with regional sausages

  • Veal steak Mogadourense style — grilled over charcoal and drizzled with olive oil from Trás-os-Montes.

  • Grilled veal chop — simple, honest, and unforgettable.

Local Shop: Sabor a Douro

In the historic center of Mogadouro, next to the Castle, the Sabor a Douro shop brings together the best of the region. Shopping here means supporting the local economy and taking home a genuine piece of Northeast Trás-os-Montes.
