📍 Alfândega da Fé • Serra de Bornes • Aldeias de Portugal

There are villages that were once centers of the world, and which time has transformed into well-kept secrets. Sambade, on the southern slopes of the Serra de Bornes, in Alfândega da Fé, has documentation dating back to the 10th century and was one of the largest abbeys in the Trás-os-Montes region—under royal patronage—and an important center for the production of wool, linen, and silk [1].
Today, the largest village in the municipality preserves this past in stone, in tradition, and in an 18th-century Baroque parish church that surprises with its scale and detail. A village for those who want to discover the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes away from the crowds [1].
The Village with Centuries of Knowledge
The name Sambade derives from "Sambadi", from Low Latin, meaning "farm of Father Sambade". This priest became famous in the 8th century in Asturias for the eloquence with which he refuted the heresy of the Monothelites [1].
Once one of the largest abbeys under the royal patronage of Trás-os-Montes, Sambade was also an important textile center. Today, shepherding and agriculture remain the main activities, with particular emphasis on the chestnut from the Serra de Bornes. Illustrious figures such as Father António José de Mesquita Pimentel, the writer Manuel de Sousa Moreira and the professor João Baptista Vilares were born in this parish [1].
Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção: Baroque in the Transmontane Interior
The landmark of Sambade is the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, completed in 1798 and classified as a Property of Public Interest. The Joanine façade, topped by an interrupted pediment with volutes, with a uniquely shaped portal and a curved window projecting from the center, is a rare example of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture in the interior of Trás-os-Montes [2].
The bell tower with clock, the chancel which is lower and narrower than the nave, the north sacristy and the House of Souls to the south complete an ensemble that is worth a leisurely visit. Next to the Church, the Territory Interpretation Centre provides context to the history of the village and the region [2].
PR6 AFE — Bornes Mountain Range Trail: From the Top of the World
For hiking enthusiasts, the PR6 AFE — Serra de Bornes Trail is the route that defines Sambade. It starts at the Bornes Geodetic Marker at an altitude of 1,200 meters, from where the view extends to the Marão and Estrela mountain ranges and, on a clear day, to the Sanabria mountain range in Spain. Along the trail you cross chestnut groves, pass by the Wind Farm with 29 wind turbines and enjoy spontaneous vegetation of rosemary, rockrose and white-flowered broom [3].
