Vias Augustas
PP4 BGC
Bragança
A linear trail of variable distance — walkable in different sections — along the Vias Augustas, the oldest road network of the Iberian northwest. The main axis in this region connected Bracara Augusta (Braga) to Asturica Augusta (Astorga) via Aquae Flaviae (Chaves), spanning 247 miles. The route crosses the present-day municipalities of Braga, Chaves, Valpaços, Mirandela, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Vinhais and Bragança, entering Spain through Zamora to Astorga. Augustus's milestones — one found in Castro de Avelãs — attest to the antiquity of this road (number XVII in the Antonine Itinerary, 3rd century AD). Waymarked by CM Bragança.
