Chestnut Tree Route
PR1 SJP
São João da Pesqueira
A 13.8 km circular trail of moderate difficulty, starting and finishing at the Chapel of São Sebastião in Paredes da Beira. After about two hundred metres, it takes a walled path towards Soutelo, passing a small irrigation dam and through groves of chestnut trees, heading for the abandoned village of Britelo (Penedono municipality) and on to Penela da Beira. From there, near the Chapel of São Sebastião, it follows paths across Serra de São Paio — probably the highest point in the São João da Pesqueira municipality — offering a sweeping panorama over the Douro vineyards, before descending back to Paredes. Along the route, enormous centuries-old chestnut trees with large canopies harbour abundant birdlife (Jay, Green Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Crested Tit, Common Buzzard). FCMP certified.
